Tempur, you may have a worn bearing on that side, have a look under the rear and check if there a lot more oil evident than you would expect. Normally the right hand bearing goes first .
I would remove the brakes and check the hand brake linkage to ensure brake parts are not loose.
Being a 280 SE,is it a 6 cylinder car or a V8?. If it's a V8 it may have a limited slip diff which ,when filled with the wrong oil or worn will make that sound. In this case, get the oil changed and check the old oil for mettalic objects. Big Peices mean a diff replacement is due ,small shiny mettalic particles are normal and no cause for worry.
With new fluid and it still makes the same sound, try not to acelerate too hard in left hand turns because you Will break it.
Limited slip diffs normally have a small tag on them saying to use special oil ( in German) and it may be shown as fitted on the cars data card if you still have it.
