74 280se alternator question

hello again, i have 74-280se w116 6cyl and i have an elaborate sound system installed, but i am going to need a bigger alt. there is a company that will build me one that puts out about 250 amps. but when i looked at this alt i was confused i've not seen an alt with just a plug. i am by no means a mechanic but if i am going to get a bigger alt i'm pretty sure i will have to make those wires ,whatever they go to, bigger. any body have any ideas what these wires are? or can i get an alt from later model car that would work?

A 250 amp alternator would be huge and not fit. Better to get a 100 or 135 or 150 amp from a recent MB, like a W140. Be aware, newer cars use a serpentine belt while the earlier ones use belts.

Where do you live that you have a 73 W116 6 cyl, N/A in the USA at that time?

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

I agree, a 250A alternator is way overkill. Consider that even squad cars (with all their lights, sirens and radios) use 140-150A units. What I would suggest is visiting a good auto electric shop to see what they can concoct for you.

thanks for your answers. and to answer wbains question i bought the car in germany while i was stationed there. and i didnt realize just how rare this particular year w116 was until i bought it and started looking for parts. the good thing is most everything is the same about this car as the later models, the bad thing is if parts that are different were to go out this car would be turned into a huge paperweight! oh yeah i am now in NC!
