Column Shift?

What is the story behind a column shifted automatic on a W114 car?

Low end option wise? Special order?

Agreed - my W114 was bought new by my Dad. and it's column shift was standard. Actually, I've never even seen a W114 automatic with console shift...

If I had to venture a guess...

I would say the option was more popular up the 250C as opposed to the four door, but there are plenty of sedans with the console shifter as well.

I would guess 75%+ of euro models was delivered with consoleshift.. That includes all engines and models.. As I've read somwhere that the front "sofa" and columnshift was not standard. I've only seen 2 /8's with front sofa IRL

The column shift cars...

delivered in the states had a "tray" in the console with a carpet insert... the "sofa" was an accessory, or option. I was given a NOS sofa for my /8 sedan by a friend at the dealer in the 1980s, they just wanted to get rid of it as it was taking up room on the parts shelves...

Different markets have different configurations; MB Tex was the base upholstery here in the States, and when you saw a velour interior [a/k/a the "fuzzy" interior] you immediately knew it was a EU version. Americans hated the velour with a passion it seems... lol.
