Glow plugs only work occasionally, why?

The glow plugs in my 1975 240D only work when they want to. I replaced them one week ago and they worked great every time, but now its back to starting fluid. I dont like starting fluid, for I dont feel like adjusting the valves every week. Even though its nice to get intimate with the ole beast, I would rather find where the relay is for the plugs, and maybe test it and replace it. Anyone have any input for me? Any help would be surely appreciated. And if you are in my area, start using Bio! i will hook you up. I make quality fuel.

On my old VW rabbit diesel, I had problems because my ground to the chasis was bad. Just something you might check..... do the plugs on these things run through a relay??? find it and check it out..... Also, WD40 makes an excelent starting fluid for a diesel.....

When do they work - any pattern? Only when hot, only when cold? Does the glow plug light work as it should? Did you check the resistance, ohm reading, on the plugs? If you used Autolite plugs, they could already be bad.

The Glow plugs have only worked once since I started having this problem. It happened for a while, I replaced them, then they worked for a week or two. Then nothing. There is no glow plug light, there is an actual glow plug in the dash that lights up red hot when they are hot. I have not touched the car for a while, but I will get a multitester and check the resistance. There is a relay, which I will check too, I just dont know where it is on the 115 body diesels. I will figure it out eventually, and will let everyone know. Thank you all for your replies, and if anyone else has any knowledge, lemme know! thanks!

The relay is under the dash on the left side of the steering column. Its an aluminum box.
