Unhappy 1971 280 SEL Get Click No Start

I have a 1971 280SEL parked it in 2001 in my garage. Charged battery and tried to start it, get one (1) 'click' and no start.

What is causing the click, external solenoid?? Click seems to come from driver side while starter is on passenger side.

I replaced battery but not sure if it is fully charged, will take it back and make sure, but still get the click - no start. Lights do not dim when I try, even with high beams.

Never any problem with starter before, garage unheated but dehumidified.

Most likely...

the starter solenoid... You could try banging on it [not too hard BTW] and see if that frees it up. Bosh reman unit or a good local re-builder can get it going for you. R/R is not too tough on these older cars.

Good luck,

JR

Where is the starter solenoid?

Where is the starter solenoid and what does it look like. I do not believe it is physically on the starter.

Found Problem

I found the wires going to the bendix on the starter were completely disintegrated. Apparently, there was a problem with the insulation on the wires and someone had wrapped electrical tape over them. Moisture and time did the rest. When I grabbed them to see if they were tight, they fell apart in my fingers.

I spliced new wires and the engine started within 2 seconds and ran. I hadn't started this car in 4 years and it was scary how fast it started. Within 5 minutes it was warmed up and running pretty smooth.

Thanks for all the help, it was just a simple problem.

Glad...

to hear it turned out to be a simple problem. Heat-shrink tubing also works wonders on some of these wiring issues...

Eirik 400 SE:

Are there many of the /8 cars left in Europe these days? I would suspect with the TUV, or its equivalent, and the heavy use these got as commercial vehicles [taxis and the like] most would be long gone from the roads.

Here in California you still see them in the road with a fair amount of frequency. I kept my 250/8 from 1979 until the year 2000 or so; it was a great car.
