Problem with my '96 220SE

I have a 220se convertible in pretty good condition, engine wise, but I have a front end problem that is kind of baffling. When I drive the car for short distance (mile or 2) there is a loud clashing sound (bang!) that seems to come from the underneath front of the car. When it happened the first time a few months ago, I checked underneath the car but could see anything loose or broken, but I did notice the breaks were only 10% working. I took the car into a nearby shop to have them look at the master cylinder or whatever might be causing the break loss, also hoping that this would point to the source of the loud bang. The mechanic said that he could find nothing but that he bled the breaks, replaced the fluid and sent me on my way home. The following weekend, I was driving the car a short distance to the grocery store (only 1/2 mile) and the bang happened again. It sounded almost as if the car had run over a large object, making me stop and look underneath to see what I could have hit. Again, nothing. But like the last time, my breaks were gone again. I hesitate to take it back to the same mechanic with the identical symptoms where he could not find anything. Right after each bang, the car is still drivable so whatever is causing the noise goes away but will come back if I drive it another mile or so.
Any ideas out there?

The front suspension is located laterally by a rod from the center rear of the crossmember to the passenger side of the frame rail. There are also two rubber mounts from the top of the subframe to the chassis. There are also two front swaybar mounts to check. See the following repair procedures:

MercedesShopWiki: DIY 108 Chassis Sub-frame Mounts

Inspect these parts carefully. I have a 220S which has the same suspension.
