Rebuilding or replacing 1977 450sl trans.

Hello, I recently purchased a 77 450sl from the original owner and it needs a transmission. It moves but not very well and is making a fairly loud rumble when in park. I have no experience with these particular cars but i want to fix it and use it for weekend drives. Can someone give me an idea as to the cost of these transmissions to do a complete rebuild including converter? Thanks Bob

I replaced the tranny on my '73 280SE and paid a little more than $2000. As far as I'm concerned, it was $$ well spent. Have you looked into local junk yards to see if there's a tranny you could use?

I was thinking about checking some of the yards but of course you never know what you are getting. $2000 doesnt sound too bad to have assurance that you are getting a trans that is all new inside. Thanks for the info, Bob
