1966 holds Idle, but Dies When put into Gear??

Have a 1966 SE
Having a lil problem, cars been sitting for about a 1 yr, I start once a week just to keep the internals moving, so I let it run for about 15 min today, And I tried to Put it into 1st gear to take it for a spin around the block, and the car sputters then dies out on me, but if i Keep the revs up then I shift into a gear it works fine.but other then that the car will hold a steady idle, but the car stalls every time when I put it into any gear.
any suggestions would be great

thanks for your time

The fuel will be pretty bad after sitting for a year, so that's not doing you any favors.

The fuel injectors are probably not spraying a nice fog pattern at idle either, so you've got fuel that's not burning very good and an injector spray pattern that's really not atomizing the fuel very well.

My suggestion (and this is IF the car was a good running car prior to being stored for a year) is that you put a can of fuel injection cleaner in the tank....like BG44K or SeaFoam, go top off the tank and then go for a nice 30min drive.

If you still have a pour idle after a good amount of driving (a rural road where you can be on and off the power alot in order to vary the load and the injector spray pattern would be ideal) then it's time to run through all the tune up items, including a valve adjustment.

You say you have not driven the car in a year? If you have not moved it at all, the brakes may have rusted to the drums. See if you can roll the car at all by hand or with helpers. Or, jack up each wheel and check if the wheel will turn. If the hand brake was set while parked, it is particularly suspect.

1974 280C W114 (Now running - driven off and on this summer)
1968 200D (Engine rebuild planned)
1964 200 (gasser parts car) & 1966 200D (complete car - Got to run. Now to see if clutch can be repaired.)
1980 300D W123 (Parts car - engine runs, but trashed)
1981 240D W123 4 speed ( In sad shape when bought - many parts from '80 300D has back on the road. Needs work, but shows promise.)
1988 300TE W124 (Does not run. 180,000)
