w114 280 pre-purchase question

Found a 1974 280 which i believe has the first variation of the m110. Haven't got to look at it yet, but have seen pictures. Sounds like it have a few minor mechanic issues ie: rough running, needs muffler, need heater hose. Other than that looks great and under $500. Is this m110 a pretty good engine? or am i just looking at another money pit?

The engines are bullet proof. What else is wrong with the car? Any rust? All the accessories work?

The body looks very clean. Minor rust in the quarter panels. The owner just told me he thinks the head needs pulled, but didn't say why he though that. I'm wondering if its just a carb issue? He thinks there's only 70,000 miles but has replaced the speedo so its officially unknown.

The carbs on those cars are difficult to fiddle with and to tune. I finally got rid of mine and replaced it with a Weber conversion.

I would check the oil and coolant. If you have oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil, walk away. Have you seen it run? Is there a huge amount of white smoke coming from the tailpipe? As for rust, it's an issue with every classic Benz I've ever seen - it's just a matter of how much you're willing to work with it and how much time you've got for repairs.
