Manifold Pressure Sensor

Hi,

Does anyone know the symptoms of a bad MPS?

Rich running mostly but that can also be caused by other components as well.
To find out if it's defective, use a multimeter set to ohms, and test terminals # 7 and #15 which should be 90 ohms and then check the resistance between # 8 and #10 that should be 350 ohms.

Yeah, I know black smoke can result, depending on the level of failure.

My 450Se doesn't blow black smoke but gas milage is not that great! I'm averaging about 13.71 mpg. The car often does emit a heavy gas smell from the exhaust at times.

That's not bad mileage at all for that car...

Do you think the gas mileage would get better with a new MPS? This car should get about 15 around town. I see that you are selling rebuilds. Are they just as good as brand new ones?

I think that depends on the condition of your's. If your unit is working fine, you'll notice no difference and just be throwing money away. If OTOH, your unit is faulty, you should see an improvement in performance.

MAP adjusting

I've had real good luck adjusting (behind the black cap) these.
And reading the plugs.
Unscrew (cclw) to lean, clockwise to richen, no more than 1/8 turn, each increment, ONLY after a complete tune-up and valve adjustment.
Best done on a long road trip.

The reason I am asking about the MPS is that my car has a strange problem. The car always starts cold or warm. After being driven a while is when the problem occurs. If you drive and then turn the car off, say you are at the gas station for example, fill up and restart the motor the car will start but then stall once it is put into either drive or reverse. Once you rev the motor or let it sit for a couple of minutes and restart the car will run perfectly again. I thought maybe the MPS is the problem but now I'm not so sure. Maybe its something in the fuel delivery system?
