I own a 1979 450 sel and am experiencing a troubling noise, the source of which I have been unable to detect for some time now. I would greatly appreciate your input, no matter how inexpert it may be.
There is a noise coming from the engine, a squeeky noise that is loudest when in gear and stopped at a light. When the car is in neutral the noise is dimmer, almost unnoticeable.
A few months ago the air pump belt snapped off and I've yet to replace it, and so I suspect perhaps another belt could be the issue at hand. However, I've also had recent trouble with my transmission, specifically the reverse gear. When parked downhill, the reverse gear will almost definitely fail to work at all, although on flat surfaces it works moderately well. In the morning when I first start the car and reverse out of my garage, I experience a gentle shaking clearly from the transmission, and it is most vigorous when not idling, but fully stopped.
As you may have gathered, my knowledge on this subject (cars) is quite limited. As such, I would tremendously appreciate your opinions and advice as it will indeed help my situation. THANK YOU!
