Suispected Water Pump Failure

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum, and firstly wanted to introduce myself. I look forward to talking to you all in the future here on this site, and maybe learning a little bit about my benz.

I have a 1972 280SE with approximately 52,000 original miles on it. Last week the fan belt split apart, and that was replaced with a new one. The week before, I had an issue with the car getting hotter than normal, and found this to be low coolant in the radiator. Upon inspection, I did not notice any leaks. I suspect that the coolant is leaking out the top valve near the radiator cap, when I think there should be a resevoir. I suspect since the cap isn't creating a good seal, there isn't enough pressure keeping the coolant in, and its leaking out of that valve. Does anyone have any experience with this type of issue. I have added fluid, and it doesn't appear to be leaking, and the fluid is almost exactly where it was when I filled it up.

Now, after the fan belt has been replaced, I finally got the chance to drive it again. Now it is making a chirping noise. It only starts usually when I give it gas, and goes away quickly. I have also noticed it to occur when slowing down. It doesn't always fit the same pattern however. I suspect a failing water pump. Do you all think that could be the case, or could it be something else?

Thanks, Jeff

Remove the belt and spin the water pump by hand - if it isn't smooth/easy the pump is failing. Your pump may have weep holes that indicate the pump is failing also.

Search first, ask second!

Does anyone have a partial or complete service manual for a 1972 280SE 6-cylinder with A/T tranny? I was hoping I could get a copy of someones manual so I know what to look for.

Thanks, Jeffrey.
