1974 TO 76 is the W114 CHASSIS, If it is newer it must be a 123 chassis car which is a different car, different shape totally. if it is the 114 chassis vehicle the major thing to look for is rust. the boot or trunk, the floorpans, the jacking points, and the front wings. basically the whole car rusts, also make sure the blower motor is working, it is a very long procedure to change it, a complete strip down of the dash and center console. a chassis number or pictures would help us determine what model you are actually looking at.

From what I have learned it definitely is the w114 chassis with the I6 m110 motor. I just don't know the bad and the good.

So far what I know:

Rusts alot (thanks banana)
Carb sucks
Check blower motor

What else to look for?

What about the price? I figured if I chose to go for it, I would definitely offer no more than $2k to start.

If the car is tidy with no major rust, if the blower motor is working correctly, then $2k is a good price in my opinion for a w114 280ce. these cars are getting rare because alot of them are ending in junk yards as they rust badly and owners don't want to spend a fortune restoring them as they are not worth alot anyway. it's a shame because they are very nice classic mercs that are comfortable to drive and quite basic to work on (from what i am told, personally i'm not mechanically minded). In my opinion it wont be long before the w114 w115 chassis cars start appreciating in value. they will get rarer and rarer. they make a great first step into the vintage mercedes world. and on a positive note the majority of parts for these cars are still readily available from the main dealers, the only parts that are not available is interior trim. good luck with your purchase.

CARFAX can only give you a report on 1981 and newer vehicles. Condition is much more important than mileage on a car like this anyway...

Better make sure the engine compressions are good and even and have a leak-down test done. The engine in the 280 is very complex and extremely expensive to have rebuilt. The carburettors are also very expensive to have rebuilt.
