Question about 1977 450 sel (4.5 liter)

I just purchased a 1977 450 sel (4.5liter) with 75,000 miles on it. I have never drove a old 450 sel and i bought it because i got a great price on a low millage classic in great shape.

While driving it, it takes a little while to get up to the 30-40 mph range. This is normal i am assuming for such a heavy car with a 3 speed transmission in it.

The main question i have is ..... at around 40 mph the car gets really sluggish like it has no power at all and then the second it gets above 40 mph it has its power back and picks up speed really fast and drives like a dream.

Is this normal for it to become so sluggish at around 40 mph?

Thanks!

Joey

I would think not. Is the transmission shifting as/when it should? Has the car been tuned up recently (always a good starting point)?

Transmission shifts when it is suppose to and is very smooth ........

So far my guess is it just needed to be driven and break the engine back in a bit. The car has only been driven around 10,000 miles in the last 15 years, so its spent a lot of time in storage. I put some techron (fuel additive to clean the injectors, etc.) and drove it around a bit today and it is running much better. I also am not used to driving a car like this so that may be part of it.

But anyways, one more questions for now.... what is this metal plate that i took a picture of - it has the first owners name and address on it and then lots of different codes and numbers..... can anyone point me to a decoder and what this plate is?

also, i have attached a picture of the car

Cheer!

Joey

Pretty car -- very nice! That plate holds the VIN, engine number, paint code, and trim code. It was meant to be put into a device rather like an old credit card machine that embossed the information onto repair orders at the dealer. Don't lose it.
