W112 300SE Long Wheel Base

I am looking at purchasing a 1965 300SE LWB.It has been in dry-storage since 1971.The body is solid, just dusty.Interior is in tact, keys, manuals everything.Wood is still very nice. The car does not start and car is sitting very low.I do not know if the air-suspension is good or not.How easy is it changing the suspension from air to coil spring?Should I fix the suspension or change it?

Repair of the air suspension is very costly. If you want to restore to show condition you better fix it. If you just wan the car for fun to tool around in you could probably swap coil suspension from a w111.

If what you say about the car is correct, you have found a desirable and original car. I have read a bit about these cars on 300SE_Main_Page_1. Chris has put together a great deal of info about them. From what I have read, if the cost and idea of fixing the air suspension daunts you, then these cars are probably not for you. Distributor caps cost hundreds of dollars for example. Buy a standard finnie to get your kicks, and leave the 300SEL to be restored to its former glory.
But looking at your list of cars, it would seem that you have enough resources to do the car right.
Now I am not an originality freak (putting a V8 in my finnie), but I believe that ditching the air suspension system is a backward step as it makes the car handle like a much more modern car than what it is.

Please leave the original air suspension. It may be costly to repair but it's what makes a 300 a 300. If you do not buy the car please let us know who to contact so one of us has a shot at getting it. Would love to see pics in the vintage gallery if you do make the purchase. Good luck!

I am all for tastefull custom work, improvisations etc. However, w112 300SE L is even more rare that a w109 300 SE L. That is a car that you leave alone, that is a car that should be restored not modified. The sad thing is, in that chassis only the 300 came in long version. So if someone wants that body on long, but does not want the troubles of the air ride, swapping is the way. OR, put a modern air suspension it will cost you less than half of what you will spend on restoring the original.
