The whole depends upon the parts.
How much do you do yourself is critical.
Is the desired car decent, not an embarrassment?
Think about it being a running parts car to be enjoyed.
Mechanical or cosmetic? two different things.
About 3 years ago I bought one 6.3, drove it home, stripped and repaint (orig db904 blue) leather seats junk, good compression, trans fine, rear fine.
The prior owner took it to a local guy for suspension work, was quoted $3,500 to $4,000.
He got discouraged sold to me for $3k, ($8k asking)
He had owned car for 15 years had lots
of mechanical work done for big$$.
He is a pharmacist. I can twist wrenches.
For the price of parts, paint and $100 pick-a-part seats
There is now a real decent late 1972 6.3 under $6K
Not a show winner, but a real good 6.3.
Bought a second one, motor turned over, rusted out body, Sawed that one up for parts, spares. $1,800 total.
