New W111 tail light assemblies

Hey guys I bit the bullet and bought brand new tail light assemblies from MB. Ouch! But what the hey only need two and then they are perfect -- right?

Well, I picked the amber and red lens - actually I can not remember if they even sold sold red anymore, but I felt I wanted the amber/red lens so I took the plunge.

Well they look great - new chrome trim was included, rubber, lens - and here is the disappointment everything else is plastic. Now I am wondering if I will use them or just try to locate solid red serviceable red lens.

I guess I should be happy I could still get them new.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

They were almost $1000 for the pair. I had paid $400 each for some 914 tail light assemblies and thought well, at least the Mercedes have real chrome around them so I did it. Little did I know everything else was going to be plastic. Not sure what I am going to do.
I can post pictures if anyone is interested in viewing new. All it takes is money and a desire. I do have to be careful as my Porsche project is not sold yet and Marilyn has not checked the credit card yet.

That is interesting Jim, I thought that the Classic Centre told me that they only had red indicator lens versions available.
So, what parts are plastic? Is the main body still diecast? Or is that plastic? Does it really matter if the main body is plastic - I mean, won't it look the same (chrome is chrome?). I would have thought that plastic may be better than die cast, as when die cast goes bad, it is very expensive to fix.
I went to a chrome shop last week and got told that it would be at least $230 each to redo the chrome if there was no pitting, and about $330 each to do it if there was pitting.
Then, the lenses are still secondhand. So $500 each for a new one doesn't seem so ridiculous (unfortunately!).
So I am trying to figure out if it is worth bothering with trying to fix up old ones. I am picking up the panels for my W111 coupe project this weekend, and that guy says he has some good used tail lights. So I will be checking those out.
Not looking forward to the 1700km drive though...
