buying a 240d

Here's my situation. I have stumbled across a 1975 240d. The owner is asking 450 bucks for it. That seems reasonable for any car, let alone this one. It runs and drives (according to the C/O) and has VERY clean body panels. The interior is good. The current owner says that the car has a "Knock." I have not heard the vehicle run yet - playing phone tag, etc with current owner, but he has said that he knows NOTHING about diesels. I know these old Merc diesels are rattly. Is it possible that he is just confused by the diesel sound? The odometer reads 90k miles, but I suppose it could have rolled over if it is only a 6 digit. Is it worth 450? would you buy it. What kind of mpg do these cars get? Thanks in advance.

If it is seriously rusty, especially on the floors, trunk, jack points and fenders and rocker panels, or has a bad engine, or an automatic transmission, that would make it as slow as walking (up hills) I would not bother with it as transportation, for any price.

there is a well known saying, that nothing is more expensive than a cheap Mercedes Benz, so I would take that to heart and keep it in mind.

body is great. no rust under it either. I have crawled all around the car, I just haven't been around the car when the owner was home. manual tranny. The only issue I know about is this "knock" that the owner describes. I mean, is it possible that this guy really is confusing normal diesel noise with "knock", because I am really hoping so.

Well, the owner is giving the car away for tip money, so why hesitate? Sounds like it's got a lot going for it. If you're interested, jump at it before someone else beats you to it, and sort out the knock later. There is a pretty high demand these days for cars like that, which can be converted to run on vegetable oil or biodiesel.

The knock could be normal diesel sounds or the knock could be major engine trouble. If you don't have the experience to distinguish the two, then you need to find someone who does, i.e. a very good indy mechanic.

If you buy it without getting the engine checked, what will you do with it if the engine is trash?

I have some experience with diesels. I just know very little about these particular diesels. The guy is holding it for me until tomorrow afternoon when we have a meeting scheduled. I think I am going to try to get it for 350. I will pay 450, but why if I don't have to, know what I mean. I just talked to the guy again and he just let me know that the car won't stay running after it starts to catch. Yeah kind of a bummer. I am thinking this sounds like injectors or clogged fuel lines or something. What else could it be? I mean I know there are like a million things. He did say that it started to "knock" more right before it did this. Thats what makes me think it is injection. I will let you know what the story is when I get it home from checking it out. Do these have a million mile odometer so I know if 90k is really 90k?
