very rough idling

hey guys. when i turn the key on my 280c it takes about 30 seconds to start at first, then she idles like a harley, and when i let go of the gas, stalls. any inf would be greatly appreciated.

Check your timing. I just ran into the same problem. On my 250, I had to set it to 30' no vac 3000 RPM to get her to run right. Yours might be different so check your specks.

At idle she runs at 15' no vac. Very different from the 4 ATDC w/ vac on retard. Had the same problem you did.

Do you have to push the accelerator a LOT in order to keep her running? Is there any black or blackish smoke involved? If so, my first thought would be carburettor flooding over.

Don't want to beat a dead horse but did you use the procedure above for timing? Did yours come with US emmissions? are they working properly? When was the last time it ran properly, Anything change since then?

the timing was done by a real old schooler who worked on these inline sixes all his life, unfortunately he retired and lives in europe now

Ok, I would double check, all you need is a timing gun, unplug the vacuum lines to the distributor, plug the vacuum lines (golf tees work very well for this), bring the engin up to 3000 RPM and point the timing gun to the timing marks.

According to the maintenance manual you should be reading 31-35'.

Before doing that check the dwell. that should be 30-40 if you have transistorized coil and 39-42.

You want to check the dwell first because a change in dwell is a change in timing.

if its a 250 or 280 c that means that its carbuerated and not fuel injection
Id just check the carbuerator out, make sure the fuel lines and everything are clean. It sounds kinda like a fuel delivery prob
