Strange loss of power on 113 280SL -- longish post

A strange thing happened to me yesterday in my 113 280SL, auto tranny.

I'd been driving it for several days ~ 500 miles, and no problem. I got back into it yesterday, after two trips, for one more quick trip and it wouldn't turn over, as if the battery was dead, however the under dash light and door open light were bright. Tried again nothing. Checked the terminals under the hood all OK. Re inserted the key and off we go on the first crank. After leaving the store started the car and put it in reverse. Moved about a foot and it died completely. No lights would come on, the temp guage stayed at 100. When I tried to crank it no sound what so ever. I moved the shifter into park , reverse, neutral, etc and retied several times. I pushed the car slightly forward and back still nothing. Tried again and fired up no problem. Finally, I was sitting on a hill waiting to cross a road and the car stumbled. The radio faded out for a second and I thought it would dye right there but it sprung back without fully dying. Made it to the garage and have left it covered.

What a shame as it's in the low 80's with no humidity for the whole weekend

Any ideas? Is there a neutral cutoff switch or something that could have gotten lose? It's as if no power can get to the starter?

theres nuetral saftey switch on the tranny so you can't start it in a R,D,S,L, That doesn't sound like your problem.

Are you sure that the battery is good, check it with a multimeter 3 bucks at a harbor frieght.

Just check the condition of the battery terminals, then check the thick lead on the starter motor.make sure it is tight.
Theres a terminal block with several large cables on it.Follow the main battery lead to find it and make doubly sure all leads are clean with no dirt ,loose wires or corrosion present.
If those are OK,then get the nuetral switch checked but my guess is the ignition switch is comming apart inside.

Sorry for the delay in posting.

79Mercy -- Battery checks OK

mercmad6.3 -- terminals and wires appear to be tight, clean and OK. Would I feel a change that might indicate a problem with the ignition switch?

It sounds like a louder/harder thunk when being shifted into park then before. However, since I am now concentrating that may just be my imagination. Does that sound reasonable/indicate something??

Thanks all for the input.
It does appear to be the cut off switch. Luckily yesterday when I had the problem I had another person available to help me. As I held the neutral cutoff lever down the car fired right up. So I've found the adjustment procedure and get get it done today.
