1973 280C Occasional Smokey Ride
I purchased my 73 280C about six months ago and it was in pretty good condition. When I first purchased it I had no smoke problems whatsoever. I had some general tune-up work done to it, including a new fuel pump. After the new fuel pump was installed I began to have time-to-time exhaust smoke issues. The smoke usually only happens if 1) I idle the car for over two minutes and then when I accelerate it kicks off smoke or 2) if I drive at 50-55 mph for a bit and then stop when I go again it'll kick up a good amount of smoke. The color's a bit hard to characterize - I wouldn't say it' black but I wouldn't say it's white either. Greyish is the best description. That's how it generally kicks smoke although sometimes it seems to have a mind of it's own and it'll just throw some smoke on acceleration or after a routine quick stop sign. Also, the car is not eating excessive oil, although I do have an occassional leak on start-up if I rev the engine high. Do I need to readjust my carb b/c of the new fuel pump? Or are there other considerations? O/w the car runs and looks great - I would love to solve the embarrassing problem. Suggestions?
