Yes, Use the W108 automatic transmission rear,
You also get rear discs,
Very good update, Replace all the rubber parts and pinion seal while you are there.

(need one? got one)

These cars are so underpowered that the gearing is very low. At 60 mph the engine is turning about 3500 rpm. This is normal and you don't need to worry. My W126 300SE turns 3000 rpm at 60 mph.

If there is vibration, check the driveshaft u-joints, center bearing and flexdisc. Alos, don't forget to grease the driveshaft and the swing axle joint on the differential. The car should be very smooth. Check and/or the engine and trans mounts as well as the rubber bushings in the rear axle training arms and lateral support.

Please check this posting for a look at bad suspension bushings.

The car displayed has air suspension and a slighjtly different setup.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

rear axle assembly

I have options, do you want the 4.5 rear axle OR the 280SE automatic rear axle? I have not counted the revolutions to confirm ratios yet. From memory now, the original 220S (standard trans) was a 4.10, the 280SE (automatic) is 3.70, the 280SEL 4.5 (automatic) is 3.23.
Yes, I have a compensating valve. I have the entire 280SE 6cyl car for sale cheap. The 4.5 axle is more valuable to me. (Spare for my 64' 220SEc)

In my 4sp manual 250SE (with a 280SE engine) going from the stock 3.90? 4.10? diff to the 4.5 rear improved the car more than any other modification I've made.

Strangely acceleration seems to have not suffered at all (in fact it may have actually improved!) and all around driveability is much much better. The 280 makes more noise than power wound up and the steeper gearing better utlizes the broad torque curve.

Of course with an automatic or a different engine this may all be different...
