this has happend to me on my w114, i just had to take off the covers under the dash and i could see the mechanics of the wipers, just take a look at them --the linkage from the driverside(where the motor is) to the other side probably came apart(made the sound). then you might just have to tighten some bolt and adjust it so they stop at the bottom.

THANKS HAD A LOOK AT IT YESTERDAY THE LINKAGE SNAPPED BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX ,HAD TO GET THE HEATER OUT OF THE WAY AND THEN I WELDED IT BACK TOGETHER.THE END OF THE WIPER MOTORS ARE SPLINED AND THE LINKAGE BAR THAT IS CONNECTED TO IT IS SPLINED ALSO,THIS BAR HAD LOST ALL ITS TEETH SO IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TIGHTEN IT IN THE RIGHT POSITION.I LOOKED FOR A NEW ONE ON THE INTERNET BUT FOUND OUT THAT YOU HAD TO BUY THE WIPER MOTOR AS ONE UNIT.LUCKY ENOUGH A NEIGHBOR HAD SCRAPPED A 108 YEARS AGO AND HE KEPT THE WIPER LINKAGE.JOBS A GOOD UN.
