Smile 240D 123 engine

We had the car for the past 6 years and have taken a great care of it, previous owner told us that he has an engine shipped from Germany and MBZ of USA dealer in San Diego installed it. He showed us the paper work. Any way, engine probably has 70K and just died on us. My question is 1) does a 300D engine work for 240D set up with a four speed. I have hard time finding a 240D engine with a reasonable price, but I have found few 300D. 2) Does any one have a 240D engine that want to sale? If you do what are you asking for and how much to ship to northern Cal, we love this car and hate to give it up but spending $1500 to $2000 on just an engine and another $700 for labor is crazy>>>

Sure, any 240D can easily manage a 300D engine.

Cool 240 D Engine

A local used part dealer in Mumbai(Bombay) has two good engines for 240D. Will you be interested? If yes I will contact them.
I own a 240D which, of course is in excellent condition. This is a very sturdy engine.

How do you know the engine is simply dead? Was it overheated and or run out of oil? $2000-2500 for an engine and labor is not unreasonably high. You can get an engine from Silverstar in Rancho Cordova reasonably.

The 240D to 300D conversion is not "easy". You have to cut and modify the drivetrain. You also have to balance the flywheel and crankshaft unless you want the bearings to tear apart.

I agree with diametricalbenz, before condemning the engine and sending it to an early grave, maybe it can be fixed. Please be more specific on exactly what "died" means. You might have a simple probably that can easily and simply be fixed. If the previous owner truly put a new or rebuilt engine in the car, then it should not be shot with under 70,000 miles if taken care of properly.

As far as the 300D engine, since the MB engines are referenced from the front of the car, and the 300D is longer, the driveshaft will need to be cut and welded together. The manual transmission opens up a whole other can of worms as the US version of the 300D never had a manual. Plus there are other small items here and there that would need to be changed or modified. Not a direct swap by any means.
