Very true, on the '75 and '76 models, the catalytic converters on these were mounted under the hood, near the manifold, and there were cases of melted wiring, underhood fires and the like due to the incredible heat generated.
For 1977 and beyond, the cat was relocated further downstream, and the problem went away.
Other than that, very solid, sturdy, reliable, long lasting, safe, comfortable cars.
Yours has the extremely desired European headlamps as opposed to the typical quad US sealed beam set up, which is a $500 bonus right there.
It looks like you'll need to go looking for some trim pieces for the left side, but otherwise, you got a very good price on the car, assuming it is rust and accident free and in good condition.
If you are fortunate, you will get books and records with the car. If not, it's a good idea to pick up an owner's manual (ebay or dealer, not expensive) and then, bring all fluids up to date (oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission, rear diff, p/s fluid, etc.) as needed. It is a 21 year old car after all.
Don't forget also, that if it runs out of gas, has a dead battery or flat tire, you can call 1-800-FORMERCEDES and they will send out a truck at no charge to you and get you going again. It is free to ALL Mercedes owners, no matter how old the car, and whether they are the first or tenth owner.
