Cooper Classics OK? Still get outside inspection?

Hi,

New to site and looking at w113's in good shape. Cooper Classics in NYC seems to have great cars and I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them. Also, is it reasonable to request a 3-rd party inspection at the higher end dealers? if so, who's good?

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

All high-end dealers are just like the low-end dealers - they want to make money. If it isn't cost-efficient for them to fix it, they won't do it. You, as Buyer, must assume the car is in WORSE condition than it appears to be, and remember that the Dealer will be looking out for himself - not you.

If you know what you're doing and you've looked at lots and lots of w113s, then you might want to rely on your own skills. If you do not have the experience (sounds like you don't), then you most certainly should get a third party inspection - if the Dealer doesn't want you to inspect it, then you shouldn't buy it. Period.

Recently dealing with CC on a photo shoot. They have my 600 for a commerical with Ivanka Trump. Seem like nice guys, but agree with earlier comment that auto brokers are looking to make money--its there business afterall. Ivanka asked them if my car was for sale--we will see how they handle that one. Stay tuned.

If I had Ivanka's money, I'd have a 600 too.

Cooper Classics

I've done inspections on cars at Cooper, and I have been steadily impressed. The owner is a very thorough man, and he only sells very nice examples - hence the prices. A private sale will cost you less, but you run some risks there too, more than through a reputable dealer who knows classic cars. I have always found that their cars match their descriptions very well, and that they represent the vehicles accurately and thoroughly. I think you will get a far clearer picture of the vehicle with an inspection, but I tend to believe that the inspection will only serve to verify their claims. The real bonus with an inspection is that you get to see all of the small flaws in the car that are simply too minor or too many to list, as with any older car that has been driven, or worse yet stored at length. I would be happy to provide an inspection for anyone looking at a Cooper item; I have a good relationship with them and they have always been honest with me. Details on my inspection services are listed on my company's website, Modern Restoration and Design, under the Services page. Email me at the address provided on the Contact Us page and I would be happy to set something up. My rate for inspections is $200, and includes over 100 photographs, a lengthy standardized condition report which I authored, and a "Plain English" summary of the above, something my customers have always appreciated. I doubt you can get a comparable service for the price, as my competition typically requires in the neighborhood of double my figure to cover their overhead due to volume. I run a small "cottage industry" and can afford to keep customer costs low. Sorry for the plug, but I can certainly be of help in this area, and especially with Cooper.

Still glad to help out here, but this thread seems to have died VERY fast. If you are serious about buying a Cooper car, please email me and I'll happily provide an inspection. Otherwise, why ask for help and then disappear? Cooper moves a lot of cars, so if you like one in particular, don't sit around and wait for the price to drop. Someone WILL pay their asking price, as they always do.

I have found their cars to be in great shape - the only issue with a Pagoda I drove a while back was a water stain on the removable hardtop's headliner, and they insisted that I get as many good photos of the issue as possible for the prospective buyer overseas. As for the inspections themselves, Cooper welcomes them, so no worries there. I enjoy doing inspections there more than a lot of other places, as they have nothing but nice cars and are honest and friendly. I can't tell you how many limo companies list their retired Bentley S3's WELL over book and advertise them as "mint," when in reality they barely function and have rot holes through the floors and trunk so big you could crawl through them to escape. Cooper doesn't pull any of that crap, for sure.
