Buttons and Switches 114

Hey guys,

I was staring at my 1973 280c's dash today and wondering how my climate control should work. As of now, i know at least one of my ac lines need to be replaced and the whole system converted from r12. At this point, most of Texas is underwater so air con is not really important. However I want to fix the windshield defogger so I can see when I drive. Right now I'm stuck doing a ghetto defogging by wiping with a clean rag.

I labeled the switches that I'm not sure about what they do. I'm pretty sure that 1 is my sealed beam fog lights and that 2 is the vacuum switch that is supposed to kick on the compressor. Which of these sliding switches is supposed to kick on the blower motor? And the defroster dial is supposed to blow the window defogger right?

Right now the system only really starts to blow air when I'm going about 60 or 70 mph down the highway. even then it just seems to blow hot air in my face and not much on the windshield itself. And I don't really seem to be able to control the blower at that speed anyways.

I know this message is kinda ambiguous but any help or suggestions you have would be great.

p.s. I'm curious to know what the little white plastic hole in the top left of the center console next to cigarette lighter is?

1. Rear Defroster
2. A/C Control Knob (it has electrical and vaccum connections inside which engage the A/C clutch and vary the coldness level) All the way left should stop and it the compressor will disengage and be off. Turn it about 10 degrees and you will hear the vaccum hiss and the vents divert the air from the outside to the A/C system.
3. Defroster vent for the windshield (more left, right less/off)
4. Left side vent heat (more-less/off)
5. Rear vents (more-less/off) supplies air either hot or cold to the rear passenger footwell
6. Right side vent heat (more-less/off)
7. Is obviously the fan speed knob with positions 1 2 or 3 with varying fan speeds.

That thing with the hole is missing the "fasten safetly belt" warning light cover.

1 = rear window defogger
2 = AC temp (cool to cold)
3/4/5/6 = heat temp and where (dual climate zones - driver and passenger)
7 = in cabin fan speed
plastic white hole used to be your fasten seat belt reminder.

To turn on the fog lights, pull the headlight switch toward you when the headlights are activated. A small green light will energize in the middle of the switch.

If you have vacuum leaks in the interior of the car, your AC system will not work properly. Vacuum bellows open/close exterior fresh air vents or interior recirc vents. Before you sink lots of $$ into an AC rebuild, I would check to see if everything under the dash works properly.

Good luck!
