New to Merc's - Looking at buying a 1973 280 - help please ! :)

Hey guys! I'm new to mercedes cars and this is my first post!

I'm from Perth (Australia) and i've got a mate who lives a few hours away (margaret river) on a farm and he has an old 1973 280 which has been sitting there under a tarp for a few years, unregistered. I've been looking for a project and i love the look of these old cars!

Apparently it's in pretty decent condition, has electric windows, sunroof, power steering etc. However it doesnt run. The reason it's sitting there is because it had a slow oil leak, and my friend forgot to put oil in it , and it ran out of oil between perth and margaret river!
He says the engine cut out on him and he got it towed. When he got it home he reckons he put some oil in it and tried to start it, then he says it started to turn over and he heard something snap and fall into the sump. So he thinks the motor isnt seized.

Anyone know what this could be? Does it need a new engine?

He wants $200 for it.... anyone think thats a bargain or is it not really worth it?

Thanks guys

Ryan

That's almost free. I'm sure you could part it out and more than recover your investment.

Ryan, if you like the looks of the Benz, get it and install a good running 305 or 350. Plenty of choice with all those Holden / HSV powerplants

It's not cheap though to fit an engine that doesnt bolt straight in! Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong with the engine?

Anyone know what other engine's i could use that would go straight in without too many hassles?

If he ran it without oil , assume it is toast.....Go for the worse case scenario . If it work's out that is is repairable, compare the cost of repairing it against the cost of replacing it with the same motor it was manufactured with....If both scenarios are too expensive to justify then look for a running one and use it for parts....
