coolant hose to nowhere on w115

i was trying to find the coolant resorvoir when i followed the line from right underneath the radiator cap and found that it lead nowhere simply pointed down towards the ground underneath am i missing a piece or is it designed like that? and how do you check the coolant level on these cars? what kind should go in (74 240d engine 68 220d body)

There's no coolant reservoir on these older cars. That line is a overflow vent. To check the coolant level, remove the radiator car but not when it's hot. You can get burned.
