1969 280SE, what to look for..

Hello,

Has been a while since I been here. The other day I saw a dark blue 1969 280SE with a vinyl top sitting on the side of the road. I called the owner and he told me the following things:

The odometer turned at 137.000 miles so he doesnt know how many miles its got.
The car has small rust bubbles on the rear passenger side door.
He also said that a new injection pump for $1100 has recently been installed.
It is supposed to be in excellent condition and it was kept in California all its life.
He is asking $4250.

I will call him today to schedule a test drive and all that. What should I look for? I know a little bit about cars but nothing specific about classic Mercedes.

Thanks,
Daniel

Here is a great place to start -

http://mercedesw108w109.com/buying.html

Also, everyone knows location, location, location for real estate.
For old cars (and Mercedes even more so) it's rust, rust, rust.

Buying the wrong car can be the cheap part of such an experience.

Good luck & happy motoring!

I would also be concerned about some funky non-original vinyl top... $4250 seems a bit on the high side for a car with overt rust issues...

It had rust and a hole in the spare tire well and the bottom of the passenger side doors. Also, all rubber bushings had to be replaced as well as all tires.
