White smoke '73 280SE 4.5

When starting the old beast from cold, white smoke comes out of the exhaust (no huge nasty plumes, just a good amount). Once the engine is warmed up, the smoke disappears.

When starting the car from warm, no white smoke.

Have I got a problem?

white smoke

white smoke would be condensation,
hold your hand in the plume for moisture test,
blow plume on a paper towel to check for oils/soot.
Check radiator for possible loss.
Blue smoke = oil passing.

No blue smoke, just white. With worn valve stem seals, can I drive this car about 500 miles without worry?

as long as it maintains temperature, oil pressure, and fires on all 8, idles well, drive it. put a quart of cheap ATF in a full tank of fuel.

should be fine, it will just leak a little oil in to the cylinders over night. that's what gets burned up on start up.

What does the ATF do? Is this like using Marvel Mystery Oil?
