1979 280CE should I buy it?

So this is would be my first Mercedes-Benz. It is a 1979 280 CE w/ 58+ K (this odometer broke 2 years ago). This is a one owner car, the mother in law. Interior is excellent, except a few tears in the leather that r obviously from just normal use. They have receipts for all the recent work done: all this work equals about $2,000. I drove it around town & on the freeway - engine sounds solid. Paint is really good just a couple of scratches. My concerns r this: the odometer/speedometer don't work. Right blinker doesn't work. Sunroof doesn't work. Wipers reset themselves a little high in my opinion. The middle air dial doesn't work (therefore no air came out) nor do the first 2 buttons above the air dials. Also this car has rust (manahattan beach for 28 years) at the bottom of both doors, under wheel wells and at the front under the bumper. The rust is really old because you touch it & it crumbles. They r asking $3,995. Odd # for a private seller but he (the new husband of the daughter of the mother in law) called a auto wholesaler for advice. How much more money is it going to take to make this baby safe to drive?Do I buy r keep looking? Oh by the way I read about the Vapor Lock issue - this car would be my back & forth car from Arizona to Cali. It get's really hot in the desert...

Sounds like a basket case. My rule: never buy an older MB with a broken odometer - never.

Electrical issues.
No working AC.
Visible rust in the body.
58k miles is BS.

Not worth $4000.
