I just procured a 1964 coupe . Eurospec with 4 speed and the euro headlamps, sunroof, i am pleased as pie!
I would like to add ac. I have seen some on ebay with the underdash units. would anyone know where i could find a unit?
i would not mind adding one of the aftermarket "vintage air" units, but i do not know where i would come up with the compressor bracket and pullys needed.
Vintage Auto air in fla has a "universal fit" underdash uit, but i still need the above components to mae it work on the benz.
obviously, i would prefer an original unit.. i wil post in the wanted section, but just wondering if anyone else out there had some input. .....(besides.. "why do youwant to ruin an original car with AC")
The Kuhlmeister units were the most common in these cars. These are fairly straight forward systems. The interior blower unit attaches to the bottom of your dash with two bolts, one wire to power, one wire and two hoses throught the firewall to the compressor. There was an entire system up for sale in ebay not long ago. Just doing a google search for Kuhlmeister will get you a lot of info and possibly a lead on one for sale. Check the pull-it-yourself salvage yards in your area. This way you can see how it comes apart and you can make sure you get all the little clips and hangers.
I mated a vintage underdash unit to a modern AC system designed to use 134a vice R12.
The compressor took some effort to mount (and we ended up sourcing an OEM Mercedes compressor mount and modifying it rather than using the universal aftermarket mount) , but it was worth the effort.
I have a 64 coupe euro also,
I puilled the A/C out
It is a long black unit rather than the short one in the sedans.
Also have 4 motors, with all the brackets.
And I wish to dispose of all this excess stuff.
