w115 240D Clutch Access? Disturbing noise :(
My dad's '74 240D 4 speed, w115. Is there a way to visually inspect the clutch? I'd like to have a look at the surface materials. He said that brake fluid had probably gotten into the clutch when the clutch slave cylinder gave out (brake & clutch share one reservoir), and that it slipped some for a while and then was fine. Now it's making noises.
This is my dad's car and I haven't heard this particular noise myself, but he says it's sort of a squealing almost like a loose belt when then clutch is almost fully engaged.
He says it doesn't do it with the clutch disengaged or fully engaged, which makes him think it's not the throwout bearing. Also, it's mostly with first gear and occasionally a bit on 2nd gear, but not 3rd or 4th.
ny ideas what this is? Is there an easy way to look at the surfaces without an endoscope? And what does it take to replace the clutch if it's something major?
