Help me start my 240d!!!!

Hello. I purchased a 1975 240d that supposedly has a bad motor. I am not sure what is wrong with the motor and want to hear it run before I make any decisions on replacement. I have a motor on hold for a week at a local wrecking yard but like I said I want to run this motor first to so I can hear the "problem".

The car had been sitting for two years and the battery was dead. The fuel tank was full of diesel yet is two years old. I smelled some of the diesel and it smells fine. I replaced the battery with a good one (although alot smaller) from my jeep wrangler and read the directions on starting it up in the owners manual.

With the key in position 2 and the starter pulled out to the pre-glow position, I see no sign of lighting of the glow plug indicator. It stays dark no matter how long i hold it out. When I pull out all the way the motor turns over fine and almost sounds as though it wants to fire. I tried this over and over for two days now and although it sounds as though it wants to run...it wont.

I know nothing about diesel engines as this is my first. Is there a way to get her to run even if the glow plugs are bad? Is there a way to put starting fluid in the cylinders just to get it to run? Where would I spray it? Where should I start to get this thing fired up? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris

Every single Mercedes Diesel I touch , has tight valves and this makes them hard to start and run bad too . they're simple to adjust .

Your car has the series wired glow plugs so use a test light to see if the last cylinder is getting any current , if so , test each one untill you find the open circuit one then replace ALL 4 of them .

Where are you located ? if it's chilly there , you might try blowing some warm air in the inlet with a hair dryer but never , EVER use starting fluid (Ether) unless you want to wreck the engine .

BTW : thwe good fellas over on the W-123 forum know these early cars pretty well and I think you'll get more responses there.

Glow Plug Update

I have the exact same year and model, do yourself a favor and upgrade the Glow Plugs to the newer pencil style. Makes a world of a difference and if one plug goes out the others will still work, not so with the original setup. Here's a link to a site with directions. For the 240D you do not need a new relay, it's really simple. Remove all the old junk and wire up the new plugs in parallel. My car starts right up on the first shot now, even in 15 degree weather.
