Just bought a 66' 300se coupe
According to receipts this car has spent its life in the bay area of San Francisco where it was someone's well cared for weekend driver, up until two years ago. Then it was shipped to Washington DC, where it sat in a garage awaiting a total restoration that never happened. I bought it for $8900 and drove it home to Baltimore a month ago.
With the information gathered from this forum and 300se.org, I've since been sorting out it's issues. I've unstuck the windshield wiper shafts and learned how to unstick the heater core valve (I'm not going to tackle this until I find new seals for both valves).
The front end feels like it needs new sub frame mounts, as it floats and wanders a bit on center and clunks over bumbs. The sway bar bushings look really dried out so I imagine the rest of the rubber mounts and bushings need replacement.
When I first got it the engine idled rich, a bit rough with a slight, random misfire. I checked the cold start valve, the thermostat on the injection pump and adjusted the valves. I've found, as others have on this forum, that it's mostly due to the car sitting. After using almost a full tank of gas with fuel injection cleaner in it, it's running much better. The idle is much smoother, though not quite perfect, and the intermittent miss is gone. I've decided to put some more miles on it to see if it sorts itself out completely. BTW, a new injection pump, points and ignition wires were put in right before it left California.
So here's an issue I haven't been able to find much info on:
Is this engine naturally loud or is it because my motor and subframe mounts are dried out?
There are no exhaust leaks and it's not the clattering of loose valves. When I'm on the highway the sound is somewhere between like being in a late 60's Hollywood car chase and piloting a small aircraft. While it sounds healthy when I hit the gas, it doesn't seem right when cruising at 60-70mph. It just FEELS like the engine is bolted Directly to the body. I've owned a 280se 4.5 and I remember that the sound insulation left something to be desired on that car, but not like this.
Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.
