Starting Problem 76 280C

I recently bought a 1976 280C. I don’t know the history of the car. I had to replace the carburetor with a used one and adjusted it to work good. The problem I am having is the car will start easily when it has not been driven for say 12 hours. However, if I try to start the car after it has ran for any length of time, it will not start. If I drive the car after it does start, it will die about 30 min later and, won’t start.

I have checked everything I know to do, the optical electronic ignition is working fine, I replaced the coil with a high performance coil, but still have the problem but it has spark, the fuel pressure is 3 lb. so it has fuel, I have tried different choke settings, same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I would suspect a fuel supply or over-supply problem. Things to check:

- on a no-start, do you get a good squirt from the accelerator pump jets?
- are the idle solenoids working? With the ignition on, disconnect the wires - they should click.
- what do the plugs look like after you try to start it?
- are the secondaries sticking open?

Just to make sure you have a good supply of fuel, I recommend clean the strainer in the tank outlet, change the fuel filter, and clean the carb. Disassemble it, soak overnight in a can of carb cleaner, rinse, and blow out all passages with air. Reassemble with new top gaskets

Post Hot Hard Starting

Wierd ~

Have you yet adjusted the valves ? if they're tight as normal , they'll close up as the engine gets hot and cause hard starting from low compression .

Might also want to carry a spare new spark plug and do a hot spark test , if the spark isn't white or ble , you have a heat induced spark problem .

Let us knmow what you find .
