smoking problem

i am having a new problem with my 1976 240d. I changed the glowplugs, belts and fuel filter and since then it has decided to start smoking. Black smoke. Excessive black smoke. any ideas?

Dunno exactly, however, if bosh pump is out of timing it smokes as if it is burning wet weed inside.
Is pump timed with belt you changed or have you removed the belt?

None of those things would affect the engine in making black smoke. Either the pump is not adjusted properly or timed incorrectly. The belts just turn the accessories.

how do you set the timing on the pump?

obviously there not proper balance fuel/air mixture.
system deliver too much fuel or there is not enough air.

1. check injectors (every 120 000 it should be cleaned)
2. dirty air filter
3. faulty injectors pump
4. problem with valves. can be clogged due to faulty EGR unit
