Advice on buying a vintage MB

I am sure that this an eternal question, but I don't know where to start.

I am interested in purchasing a vintage Mercedes Benz, but know very little about the cars. Can someone direct me to some resources that will describe the individual models in sufficient detail to allow me to narrow down my search to a model that fits my needs and budget?

Perhaps you could tell us in general terms what you might be interested in (coupe, sedan, roadster?) and then we could point you in the right direction.

Coupe would be best, sedan is okay.

Okay, good question. I knew I would have to answer it sometime. Let's set it at 10K for now.

Well, that's a reasonable budget. Here are a few candidates.

This one has a fairly rare manual trans.

eBay Motors: Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series (item 330081737014 end time Feb-03-07 18:23:20 PST)

Same thing, but a later version with the larger 2.8L engine and an automatic.

eBay Motors: Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series (item 190077487437 end time Feb-07-07 17:00:00 PST)

Here's a very nice coupe, somewhat overpriced, though.

eBay Motors: Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series (item 190078452191 end time Feb-10-07 17:16:25 PST)

If you're willing to stretch yourself a little, here's this beauty:

eBay Motors: Mercedes-Benz : 200-Series (item 160078654653 end time Feb-04-07 18:53:06 PST)

Or this one with 40K

eBay Motors: Mercedes-Benz : 400-Series (item 160080749362 end time Feb-07-07 13:17:29 PST)

These should help you with your research.

It really depends on who you are, what you want to have as a toy (fast, fun, classy, quirky-cool), and then on how much you want to spend.

I'd suggest taking your money and putting it aside, go out and buy Mercedes Enthusiast and Classic Mercedes magazines, do homework on websites, and see what MB style suits you.

Then go find the best example you can - DO NOT BUY THE FIRST GOOD ONE. As you look at more and more cars, you learn more and more about what makes a good one. There are a lot of good deals out there, so pass on a few so you can get smarter.

I know this will seem like a blatent plug for my biz, but drop me a line. I sell Euro classics for a living, and personally have a small collection of Mercs. I can help you find a good car in your price range and help you skip something that needs alot. I just sold one of my personal cars, a 78 450 SL with 77k miles for $9500. The reason I sell cars is that I like to help people find what they always wanted. I got into the biz because too many dealers were not real car guys, just people out to make a buck on anything. I only cars I personally like or would own myself. If nothing else email me to ask questions about others cars. I know many of the dealers out there selling these cars, and can help you ask the right questions.

Have you looked in Hemmings? There is a monthly print version and online. The online is at Hemmings Motor News: Auto Classifieds - Hemmings Auto Classifieds feature cars for sale nation wide.

Always a lot for sale and may be a good starting point to give a general overview of the MB market and products. Also, as previously mentioned you can use ebay. There you will get a feel for asked and final offers for MBs. Remember that with ebay many shoppers are looking for low ball sales and the final bids may not accurately reflect realistic sales prices, YMBV.

Good luck

Mike
