I saw a 1973 280 I6 for sale on craigslist and have some questions. The seller said that the car is running well mechanically, and exterior probably okay. Car has about 105k miles and asking for $2k.
1) What is the going rate for these cars? Is $2k fair? Or at $2k should I expect the car to be in only marginal condition?
2) Can I expect much mechanical issues with this car? Will I be expecting large unscheduled repair bills from time to time? I don't work on cars at all so will probably need to take it to a mechanic.
Well I would recommend paying around 4000 and you can get one that is in good running and looking condition. The cars in general hold up very well due to most of them living pampered lives.I am a poor college student and I have a 72 sel 280 4.5. It is my second car, I would not recommend it as an everyday driver but it is reliable. The gas expense is the problem. Overall, the car is awsome and I don't regret getting one at all.
Hey There,
dap019 is right. You can pay a bit more upfront and be more confident in the car because going cheap often means paying much more in the long run. Look for a solid car. Rust is a killer and can only be fixed by major cutting and replacing with steel. Fuel Injection systems are expensive to replace along with the rear air suspensions.
My 1970 280 6 cyl. had the FI replaced before I purchased it and came with rear springs. It was restored in the late '80 and hasn't seen winter since. Very solid and in good shape in and out with about 80K original miles. It's available in Minnesota and pics are posted in the for sale section of the forum.
I'm looking to buy a Russian motorcycle... otherwise she wouln't be for sale.
Yep. I'm still alive and so is Helga. I'm still looking for a good home for her. Had a couple offers for her to go to some college students but it didn't seem like the right fit. They wanted 'get in and forget it' daily drivers all year round which would have eventually destroyed the car.
When I get the Ural I may take you up on the translation thing. I'm also trying to work some freelance video work with the manufacturer. Who knows? Maybe it could evolve into a video shoot at the factory in Irbit, Russia. That would be cool.
Again, if you know of anyone who may be interested in my '70 280 SE please let me know.
mines a daily driver, easy to do maintainence on, though some on here would consider mine a wreck, i turn the key and it goes, and i have a 30mile commute, and i weekend 180 miles away every weekend. the only weak part of this series that i know of is all the plastic in the valve train, tensioners and clips and such. you may want to get these replaced just on general principal right away. i replaced mine just to be onthe safe side, and enjoy carefree driving every day.

you wont be sorry, mines the short version of dap19's, and its great. i had a 420sel, an 85, its was good, but i like the sportyness of the short wheelbase a little more. the chrome "4.5" on the trunk lid blows my cover when I'm hanging around the straight six crowd, lol.
