| The lobes on the assembly, not the stalk, wear out. You can take the stalk off the column with just a few screws, and then use a rat-tail file or a dremmel to deepen the dip on the assembly where the rollers attached to the stalk settle when you "set" it for turning. try posting in the w123 forum, since I am sure they would have pics. This is a common issue in older benzes, i did this in my w108 and a number of others over the years.
Just don't make too deep a valley for the roller or else it will be too hard for it to reset, so make baby steps when you grind the aluminum.
