The gauge sounds like the more likely candidate, IMHO. I'm sure you can have it repaired if need be...

same here....

I have a 73 280SE 4.5, I have a speedo problem too. While driving at a high rate of speed (80-85mph) my needle started shaking, then fell to 0 (I'm still moving at this point). Now the guage wont read anything.... the odometer is stopped as well.

Guage or cable? I'm thinking this car hasnt gone over 50 in a long time.... it was owned by an 86 yr old guy who didnt go far. 42,000 original miles.

How do I pull the guage out? My 240D and 300E guage pods both came out with a light pull.

Thanks for any help!

Bill

Now that sounds like a cable.

Pulling the speedo is a bear (other b words come to mind). Mine was inoperative totally. Luckily (strange use of the word in this case), my heater motor needed replacement, so I had the dash apart anyhow. Still, with all the room to maneuver, getting the speedo out was a royal pain. And come to think of it, I put in the wrong speedo, and even so, the odometer doesn't work. I'm going to buy a correct one from eBay, take it to a speedo shop to get it repaired/rebuilt, and have someone else install it. Paying the $$ to have it done is well worth not having to deal with the stress!

30 hours? Once I had an idea of what I was doing, I got the dash apart in about 8 hours. So, total after taking apart, and replacing everything, I'd say about 18 or 19 hours. This would also be a good time to replace the control levers and have the heater core pressure tested.
