New guy here with a few questions...

You guys are going to hate me for asking this, but I own a '72 280SEL with the 4.5 and have had nothing but trouble with the engine since I've owned it. Has anyone done an engine swap on one of these vehicles using a 350SBC or something of the like? I absolutely love this car and would hate to get rid of it, but the 4.5 has just been such a pain, and I spend more time working on the car than driving it (granted, it is a weekend toy)

Any advice and/or links would be greatly appreciated.

Never had problems with my engine either. I've had some smaller issues with sensors and wiring though, but have solved everything (except for the wiring).

When I got the car it barely ran at all, but after I replaced the plugs/wires/fuel pump and a few sensors it ran quite well, except that when the engine was up to temperature it would sputter under throttle, also when you turned the steering wheel without throttling it the engine would cut out. It also has a rather severe oil leak towards the rear of the engine (nothing i'm not used to though...i drive a land rover )

it just seems like an engine swap would be the easiest solution to these problems...especially with the oil leak it has.

heres a picture of my girl

An engine swap would be considerably more difficult, unless you swap it with another M117 4.5 Mercedes engine.

I agree with all the other posters. Except for the weight and the piss poor fuel mileage, the 4.5 is a pretty bullet proof engine. I think you need to quit dinking with it and get a professional MB mechanic to set it up right. I did the pre delivery inspections on those cars when they first came out, and found them to be exceptional machines.
