68 250s w108 to buy or not?

hello folks, a friend of mine is offering to sell his w108 68 250s twin carb of $1,500, it has only one owner, 155,000kms on the clock, it has stick shift on the column, converted into power steering from later w108's, has airconditioning, orig but faded paint, my questions are should i but this? is the 250 a problematic engine, are the parts hard to come by, all the trims are in excellent condition, it is blue on blue, it still has the original becker stereo. are the suspension parts easy to maintain, and as affordable as the w123?

Some parts are hard to come by, but in general, availability is excellent, especially given the car's age. Suspension/steering parts are more expensive than on a W123, primarily due to the kingpins, which is a very costly and commonly needed repair. If the interior is good, the car is rust-free and seems mechanically sound, I'd say go for it!

hello german star, its interior is intact, rust free body and all trims complete but the car has not been running for a year, the brake booster is not original anymore its from a toyota crown, carb needs overhaul but all in all the car has been pampered

Carb repair kits can still be had. Booster is expensive, best to look for a good used one if the current setup troubles you.

hello german star, how about the fuel pump im sure it needs replacing, and is the 250 engine same as the ones used on the w123 250?

MB ran that twin Zenith carb setup for many years. They are excellent carbs if they are set up properly. That is the trick, finding someone in your area who knows them. The biggest complaint owners have is bogging down and engine dieing during warm up. Just setting pre throttle gap won't solve the problem. Other than that they are fairly trouble free. I have to agree with German Star, those king pins can lay you out if they need replacing. King pins are superior to ball joints if they are properly serviced, which is where the rub comes. Nobody ever got them serviced, at least not in this country. Parts are very expensive for the MBs. Incidently I still have the special reamer to rebuild those king pins, but I haven't done one in years.

Fuel pump is inexpensive. The engine bears no similarity to that of the W123 250.
