117 and 116 engine interchangeability

I have the opportunity to buy a used, running 116 engine for a reasonable sum. My '74 - 450SL has a 117 engine, of the same displacement and I wonder if these two engines are interchangeable and, if there are any differences, where or how would they matter?

I've looked in the MB CD and have found nothing to shed light on this subject. My engine has the solid lifters and I know that the 116 engine I am considering to purchase, has hydraulic lifters. Other than that, there are no readily apparent issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was no M116 that was 4.5L. They were 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2L. To answer your question, though, it should fit fine. Now, what I think may be happening is you're being offered a 4.5L out of a W116 vehicle, in which case it will still fit, but you'll have to swap the oil pans.

Thanks, Flyboy, it is just what I wanted to know, and I believe you are correct in your view of what it is I am being offered. In any case, I shall confirm before purchase.

Cheers,
