starter and transmission

Very often my car does not start the first time I try -- nothing happens when I move the key into the "start" position. Then, I put the car in neutral and try again. Sometimes this works, but usually I have to put the car in drive momentarily and then back into neutral. Then when I try, it starts right up. What's going on?

Possibly a bad neutral safety switch...

Also check the shifter lever bushings, maybe worn, causing slop or play in the linkage.
