RPM flare in my 1973 280 sedan

I'm not sure if this is something that happens on all 1973 280's or just mine, but when I press the accelerator from dead stop or when slowing down to a stop while in drive, the transmission seems to shift through another gear, besides the four I know of. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but when it's idling in drive, it's in first gear, right?

When I press the accelerator, the engine hits some high rpms (well over 3000) then the transmission seems to shift and the rpms increase like normal through first and into second. It's also a bit of a jolt, very much unlike a normal shift. I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me what that is? If it's a serious problem, I want to get to work on it right away.

Might be cured by something as simple as an adjustment to your modulator valve.

When you're in drive , engine idling, say at the stop light, when you accellerate, the trans. shifts 2,3,4.... sounds like it's going into first during the last 5mph of deceleration to stop.
