Good luck with the 280SE 4.5L - how did things work out with the engine? I just bought one recently, seems pretty good so far but runs a bit rough at idle - given I am in New England I'll be tinkering in the garage rather than driving it for the next 2-3 months.

BTW I hadn't seen an owner's manual before that lists expected oil consumption - in the case of this car it says 196-235 miles/pint (US) - sounds like a lot to me since I just gave my son a '92 Volvo 4-cylinder wagon that doesn't any oil between changes after 200K miles on the same motor. I'll have more data when I've driven it more.

The rear reading lamps were only on the long wheel base model 280 SEL. When I did my valve stem seals (engine in the car) the guides were so worn, it was hard to keep the cylinder filled with air! but after replacement there was virtually no smoke on start up.

Yea, I've noticed this complaint from other 280 owners (even the I6 model had stem seal issues).

Its a shame because i'm not losing any compression, engine revs smooth and power is good. To go all the way into the engine to get rid of the smoke issue would set me back more than it may be worth. It smokes on start up only sometimes, well, we'll see.

I may sell the car later this year and get a karman ghia, at least thats better with gas.

(who am i kidding, I can't give up on this ride!)
