1975 230 timing chain?

Spent a day at the local Thai mechanics yesterday, repairing the leaking radiator pump, leaking oil pan, welding some of the chassis, and cleaning the spark plugs. On starting the engine, there was an explosion in the engine, with a plume of white smoke coming out of the carb, and I turned off the ignition. It seems that the mechanics connected the plugs in the wrong sequence. After reconnecting in the correct order, the car ran OK, but somewhat rougher than before, with what sounds like slippage of the timing chain on rapid acceleration; kind of a whirling noise in short bursts. Does it seem likely that the timing chain may have slipped or shifted as a result of the incident with the wrong firing sequence?

Had a look for details on resetting the timing chain on the forum, but couldn't find much of use. Could anyone direct to a good source on the subject, ort outline the basics if this is indeed the most likely source of the problem? If the chain has slipped, or otherwise been damaged, how critical is the problem likely to be? Should driving, and the chance of further damage be minimised until the matter is attended to?

Thanks for any advice; local and personal Benz mechanical knowledge is limited...
