Weird 1968 200 in Australia

I just attached a photo (first time I tried it - hope it works). This car is a 1968 200 in Australia. Can someone tell me about the weird fake grilles on each side of the central grille. Were these original equipment or an option? I think they look really neat. Would they be available anywhere?

I'm not completely sure but I remember seeing these on a lot of Benzs at the time -- stone chip protector?
They just sit in front of the paintwork

I think is that. Or for bugs. Some countries you'll find cars with different protectors for bugs not to get stuck.

I think this is specifically for Ozzie Benzes.... as well as those plastic shields in front of the headlights. Pretty helpful I'd say! My 190E has cracked headlight covers (yes, those DOT ones) and stone chips all over the hood.

This is the first time I've seen those and I have seen many MB's of this vintage in South Africa and the US.

I've seen these for sale on Ebay. They were apparently aftermarket grilles to protect the car/paint from rocks, and small flying things, which I suppose Australia has a lot of. They're rather rare accessories, actually.

They're not rare here, they are very common actually,I have even seen a W116 with a set of them amde to cover the headlights.
OZ still has a lot of Dirt roads beyond the sight of politicians so the stone grills did the job...until a stone (rock) hit the headlight.
Check out some variations here,on the 6.3 it even has holes for the spot lights...

I guess those would be a baby version of a roobar. A joeybar, perhaps?
